Exploring how we can use natural resources to make alternative materials, which have less detrimental impact on the environment.
For this project I wanted to enquire into what future materials can have positive contribution towards our planet, through using natural materials within textile design.
Inspired by those working in the field of bio-design- an emerging field aligning science, art, and design to explore progressive methods of using living organisms as a resource for producing resources and materials. With the aim of reducing the negative impacts inflicted on our planet from the production chains used in the fashion and textile industry.
Making my own fruit leather, by blending household fruit and vegetables to produce a smoothie texture, this I then dehydrated (dried out in an airing cupboard), which after a day produces a leather material. This I could then us to shape, and model into a garment you see pictured. The benefit of making the top from fruit, not only crated a natural garment, but the smell of fresh fruit was something noticeable and another benefit.
The inspiration for the photoshoot was to have the model surrounded by nature, to elevate this idea of future material resources coming from the earth, and return to the earth in a cyclical journey when disposed off.
