This publication is an exploration and journey into how Graphic Design can evolve current symbols and terminology associated with Sustainability, to an evolved Language, Shape(s), and Colour(s) to help visualise a transition towards a Regenerative culture.
The publication begins by bringing awareness to a degenerative cycle Sustainability has led us into, and prompting us to look towards Regeneration as a positive vision for permanent changes for our eco-system. I argue that Modernism’s need for efficiency has influenced society to become blinded into thinking Sustainability is a system where design aims to produce products that are “less bad” rather than doing “more good”.
To support the conclusions I was making into what evolved Language, Shape(s), and Colour(s) can illustrate a Regenerate identity, I chose to work collaboratively, by interviewing practitioners working directly in the design field, who have informed my understanding of regenerative design. Whilst this is a proposal, it begins to open a discourse into why society must address the root problems regarding our systemic inertia of continuing to use Sustainability as a resolution for mitigating impacts to our eco-system, and educates how these evolved guidelines are a starting point in helping globalise Regenerative systems.
The publication was printed in Central Saint Martin’s print facilities. The paper used for the printed copy is a combination of Crush Corn 120gsm, and Crush Grape 100gsm. Both paper types are FSC certified, as well as being manufactured using EKOenergy. The publication is Swiss bound and the cover is plant seed paper.
